Questions About Light Hiking in Ireland?

Find answers about our guided walks, trail selection, and how to prepare for your adventure in Killarney, the Burren, and Glendalough.

Killarney focuses on lakeside and woodland loops—think the Muckross Loop (4.2 km, mostly flat) with water views and rest spots every 1-2 km. Glendalough is valley-based with a monastic setting; the valley floor walk (3.5 km round trip) stays gentle but involves more historic features and narrow mountain passes. Both are doable for most fitness levels, but Glendalough has slightly steeper sections if you venture beyond the main valley.

The full Burren Way is 42 km over 3-4 days—that's not for everyone. But the individual segments? Absolutely. We recommend breaking it into 8–12 km daily sections (like Doolin to Fanore, about 10 km), which takes 3–4 hours at a relaxed pace with a proper breakfast and packed lunch. The limestone terrain is rocky but not technical; it's the distance that matters more than difficulty.

Three things: distance, elevation gain, and terrain type. If you can comfortably walk 5 km on flat ground at home, you're ready for most Killarney routes. We always list elevation gain (aim for under 200 m for a relaxed day), and we describe terrain—rocky vs. gravel vs. paved. Start with our easiest routes and build up. Honestly, most of our visitors underestimate themselves.

May through September is peak season—longer daylight, milder weather, and better trail conditions. April and October are lovely too, just shorter days and occasional rain. Winter (November–March) isn't impossible, but paths get muddy and light fades by 4 pm. If you're planning a Burren Way segment, summer is ideal because accommodation books up fast and you want full daylight for limestone terrain.

Waterproof jacket (Ireland is wet), decent walking boots with ankle support, and a small daypack. Trekking poles are brilliant for knee support on descents—honestly, they're a game-changer for most people over 65. Bring 1.5 litres of water, snacks, and a basic first aid kit. That's it. Nothing fancy needed.

Get in touch via our contact page and tell us about your fitness level, preferred region, and what you want to see—wildlife, history, views. We'll suggest a route or arrange a guided walk. Most people start with self-guided routes using our detailed guides, then progress to multi-day adventures once they've found their rhythm.
